No matter its size, there's no reason why a small bedroom can't be characterful and individual. It's important to find the right balance in a bedroom, especially if space is limited. It's important to incorporate a comfortable space to sleep and relax, while making sure there's still ample storage to house clothing, books and other treasured possessions.

Take inspiration from these six simple ideas for making the most of the space while adding decorative flair:

1. Pattern clash

An eclectic mix of prints can work to great effect in a small space with surprising results, as seen above. Here, an unusual collection of patterns, from a vibrant oriental floral velvet (Liberty), a contemporary geometric hexagonal printed linen (Rapture & Wright) to a classic wool plaid (Voyage Decoration) has created a bold look with quirky individual charm. As pattern is mainly contained to the bed, it becomes an interesting focal point and the rich colours of ochre, plum and navy blue, selected from the striking headboard design, have a warm cocooning effect.

2. Pared-back style

Giving a sense of spaciousness, all-white painted panelled walls, as seen above, provides a bright and fresh backdrop to this vintage-style bedroom. Calm colour – soft tones of lilac – has been introduced on bedlinen. Decorative-edged sheets and pillowcases, with pretty embroidered cushions and painterly artwork, hung from a versatile peg-rail add interest. Vintage fruit crates double up as a side table.

3. Creative detail

Here a section of wallpaper (Silvergate BP852, £110/roll, from Farrow & Ball), cut into an ornate shape (above), makes an imaginative, decorative and compact headboard in an otherwise pale room. Start by making a template of the shape and size you need from paper, remembering to extend the headboard at each side so it is slightly bigger than the mattress. Using the template, draw out and cut the shape from the wallpaper. It's unlikely the wallpaper will be wide enough to make one shape, if the pattern needs to run vertical, so you may need to join two halves together, ensuring the pattern matches seamlessly along the middle join when pasted to the wall.

4. Hidden space

A pair of lightweight tie top curtains, creates an effective room divider in this open plan room, above. A private bedroom area is created without the need for structural alterations. For a relaxed feel, scatter plump cushions and pillows over the bed and pull back the curtains during the day to make a comfortable day-bed. A collection of woven bags, hung along a useful peg-rail, doubles up as a handy place for clothing and accessories, while a salvaged plant stand and chair are used as tables.

5. Upcycled storage

Here, drawers re-purposed from old furniture, have been repainted and lined, and transformed into handy under-bed boxes (above). Attach caster wheels underneath to allow each one to be moved easily. In a small bedroom, simple open base iron or wooden bedsteads, are ideal as they leave room underneath for storage, to help keep clutter under control. Mix and match traditional plaid and stripes with intricate florals and paisley patterned linens and quilts to add interest and warmth.

6. Well ordered

A clever mix of concealed and open shelving, contained to one wall, has been used in this bedroom above freeing up space in the rest of the room. By choosing a bespoke option, you can tailor-make wall storage to suit your style or space, to include all the practical elements you require, from a wardrobe or desk to several shoe racks. Try James Mayor and Neville Johnson for made-to-measure ideas. Here patterned wallpapers and boxes in similar shades and vibrant furniture add colour against the otherwise neutral backdrop.
